I’ve been hearing it for years but it’s really starting to really tick me off.
How many times have you heard your friends say…or perhaps how many times have you said…”I don’t like that band anymore. They sold themselves out. They’re too popular.”
That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. It mainly comes from those people who pride themselves in knowing about music that other people don’t know about. The “Insiders.” When one of their “insider” band babies suddenly realizes the fame and fortune that they’ve been working toward for years, the “insiders” turn on them.
I understand that many times when bands make it big they change their sound somewhat to appeal to the masses. But lets keep it in perspective: they didn’t recant their beliefs in the one true God. They’re just trying to make money. They just decided they’d like to have a few more big screen TVs.
If I really liked someone who worked at Starbucks, I wouldn’t get all hot and bothered if they decided that they might like to get a job that pays more. I wouldn’t say…NO, STAY HERE AND GET MY FRAPPUCINOS. I KNEW ABOUT YOU LONG BEFORE ANYONE ELSE DANG IT!
I know for a fact that when people get together and form a band they don’t all sit around dreaming about the days, 25 years from now, when they’ll be still playing at the local bar and the occasional battle of the bands. In some way, every band wants to be like U2, whether they admit it or not. So “insiders,” quit being ticked when you aren’t in the select group of fans anymore. The band doesn’t know who you are…and they don’t care. They don’t want to keep serving you Frappucinos. They’d rather make lots of money, date lots of women and probably go through a stint of rehab (or two). It’s just the way it is. PLUS, as much as you hate to admit it, the band probably got excited when they saw their video on MTV.
And if you were in their place, you’d do the same thing. Quit complaining.
