Why do we always have to sit or stand in circles to talk? Sure, it’s fine for awhile but inevitably the time comes in the conversation where everyone is silent. And that point is awkward. Sitting in a circle only makes it worse. You must look at the other people in the circle. You might give a little smile or nod that says “Yeah, that was a good conversation.” Or you might pretend like you’re interested in something going outside of the circle, but of course you’re not. You’re just feeding the awkwardness.
If you’re a talker, all of the non-talkers start to look to you to think of something else to say. For me, I usually end up saying something like “OHHHH, man I’m tired,” (even if I’m not) or “I can’t wait for the weekend.” This also contributes to the awkwardness because no one wants to talk about any of that. So, we go back to looking at each other, sitting in our circle.
